How to Clean Your Dining-Room Table
Often, the dining room table takes center stage when you're hosting. Whether you're hosting the entire family or just a few close friends, that table deserves to look its best.
To clean your dining room table,
Start by clearing off all items.
Dust with a microfiber cloth
Clean with a solution appropriate for your table’s material—wood, glass, marble, laminate, or metal.
Finish with a polish or protector for a gleaming, guest-ready surface.
There is a little more to it though; This is one of our clients' favorite house cleaning blogs, where we break it down into 3 simple steps so that you can have a spotless, guest-ready dining table without the stress.
DM-AZ House Cleaning Blogs Presents:
How to Clean Your Dining Room Table
Step 1: Clear It Off
Start by clearing off everything. This is much faster than working around items. This gives you a blank canvas and ensures you don’t miss a spot.
Step 2: Know Your Table Material
Different tables call for different care. Let’s break it down:
Wooden Tables: Use a microfiber cloth to dust, then clean with a mix of mild dish soap and warm water. Finish with a wood polish or conditioner for that holiday shine.*For Antique tables, we do not recommend using microfiber, as it can damage the wax finish.
Glass Tables: Spray a streak-free glass cleaner directly onto the cloth (not the table) and wipe away smudges, fingerprints, and water rings. A clean, lint-free cloth ensures no streaks or lint are left behind.
Marble or Stone Tables: Use a damp cloth with a gentle pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid anything acidic (like vinegar or lemon) as it can damage the surface. For extra shine, buff the surface with a dry microfiber cloth.
Laminate Tables: Laminate is low-maintenance! Use a damp cloth with mild soap to clean. Avoid abrasive sponges that could scratch the surface.
Metal Tables: Wipe down with a damp cloth and a mild soap solution. Dry immediately to prevent water spots. If it’s stainless steel, use a specialized cleaner for extra polish.
Step 3: Handle Details and Stubborn Spots
For intricate carvings or grooves, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to get into the hard-to-reach areas. Stubborn sticky spots or rings from glasses? Simply lay a damp, warm rag over the stuck-on or sticky spot. Come back in 2-5 minutes and gently wipe away.
BONUS: Set the Scene
Now that your table is gleaming, bring back the decor—but keep it simple. A clean table doesn’t need much: a tasteful runner, a few candles, or maybe that heirloom gravy boat that sparks family conversations every year.
Tips to Keep It Clean
Enforce a "No Dumping Zone:”: The dining table isn’t for mail, backpacks, or random clutter this week. Designate a basket, bin or other spot for the usual table clutter to go in this week.
Spot clean as needed: A quick wipe daily can keep your table picture-perfect.
Protect during meal prep: Use placemats or a tablecloth to guard against last-minute spills. Special mats or even oven mitts under hot serving dishes will protect your table’s finish from heat-damage.
